Stepping out for an afternoon walk just now, a journey underground into the bustling heart of Manhattan revealed this classic New York City subway scene. Captured in striking black-and-white tones, the stainless-steel exterior of an E train bound for 8th Avenue reflects the gritty, metallic beauty of the transit system. Framed by heavy structural columns, the illuminated destination sign and the quiet silhouettes of passengers looking out from behind the windows create an intimate, cinematic snapshot of daily urban life.

 

There is a distinct, moody poetry to the New York City subway system that comes alive away from the bright surface streets. During this afternoon commute, pausing on the platform offered a brief, framed glimpse into the private worlds of fellow travellers sharing the same metal carriage. Some places seem to call you the moment winter arrives, and for me, Whistler was one of them. I spent a week in this spectacular corner of British Columbia surrounded by snow-covered mountains, frozen landscapes and that unmistakable winter energy that makes you want to get outside and explore. Whistler is famous for skiing and snowboarding, of course, and during the winter season the village is alive with visitors, but there is much more to this mountain paradise than the slopes. For me, the experience that truly stood above everything else was quite literally above everything else—a helicopter flight over the mountains and glaciers surrounding Whistler. I bundled up against the cold, climbed aboard and watched as the helicopter lifted away from the heliport, leaving the busy ski village behind. Within minutes, the familiar landscape had transformed into something extraordinary: towering peaks, endless forests, frozen lakes and enormous fields of untouched snow stretching in every direction.

Seeing Whistler from the air was completely different from experiencing it from the ground. The helicopter carried us over the dramatic landscape of Garibaldi Provincial Park, where glaciers and snow-covered peaks seemed to continue forever. Looking down at those immense frozen landscapes, I felt incredibly small, but in the best possible way. Then came the moment that turned an already unforgettable flight into something truly special: we landed on a glacier. Stepping outside and standing in that vast white wilderness felt almost surreal. The cold air, the silence and the enormous mountains surrounding me created one of those rare travel moments when you simply stop thinking about everything else and take in where you are. The entire helicopter experience lasted roughly an hour, but time seemed to disappear. From above, the jagged peaks and snowfields looked almost unreal, like a movie set created for some epic adventure, except this was real and I was standing in the middle of it.

Of course, Whistler offers plenty of adventures without leaving the ground. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, zip-lining and countless other winter activities attract visitors from around the world, while the après-ski scene provides the perfect excuse to slow down afterward with a hot drink beside a roaring fire. But for me, the helicopter flight was the unforgettable highlight of the week. It wasn’t the cheapest experience, but some travel memories are difficult to measure in dollars, and this was definitely one of them. Looking back, I remember not just the spectacular views but the feeling of hovering above a landscape that seemed almost untouched by time. As my week in Whistler came to an end, I already knew I would want to return. There is something about the combination of fresh mountain air, deep snow, dramatic peaks and endless opportunities for adventure that makes Whistler difficult to leave behind. And one little fact I discovered along the way: Whistler takes its name from the high-pitched whistles of the hoary marmots that inhabit the mountains.
