After an exhilarating morning exploring the breathtaking Cape of Good Hope, we set off toward Stellenbosch, leaving the rugged coastline behind and heading into a completely different South African landscape. Before long, the scenery transformed into rolling hills covered with vineyards, historic buildings and endless shades of green beneath the bright Western Cape sunshine. Stellenbosch felt like another world, and after the wild beauty of the Cape Peninsula, there was something wonderfully relaxing about spending the afternoon surrounded by vineyards, good food and even better views. Situated in South Africa’s Western Cape, Stellenbosch is one of the country’s most famous wine regions, and everywhere we went there seemed to be another beautiful estate, another vineyard stretching toward the mountains and another tempting reason to stop for a tasting.

We visited several wineries during the day, but the place that stayed with me most was Constantia Glen. Perched below Constantia Nek, the scenic mountain pass connecting Constantia with Hout Bay, the estate offered exactly the kind of setting I had imagined when I thought about a South African wine country experience. We settled down for lunch on a sun-filled patio overlooking the vineyards, with the mountains rising beyond them. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere relaxed and the wines complemented everything perfectly. It was one of those lunches where you realize there is absolutely no reason to hurry. We could simply sit, talk, eat, drink and watch the landscape change in the afternoon light. Having a chauffeur for the day made it even better because nobody had to worry about driving after the wine tastings. We could raise a glass, enjoy another bottle and simply let someone else take care of the road.

What I remember most about Stellenbosch isn’t necessarily a particular wine or even a particular meal, but the feeling of the day. After spending the morning beside the wild Atlantic coastline, we had moved inland to a landscape that was softer, warmer and beautifully cultivated. The vineyards seemed to stretch endlessly across the valleys, and everywhere I looked there was something worth photographing. Even if you’re not particularly interested in wine, Stellenbosch is worth experiencing simply for the scenery, food, architecture and atmosphere. For me, it became one of those unexpected highlights of a trip to South Africa—a reminder that sometimes the best travel days aren’t about ticking famous sights off a list, but about finding a beautiful place, sitting down for a while and enjoying where you are. And with a glass of South African wine in hand and the vineyards spread out in front of me, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend an afternoon.
