Nestled deep within a dramatic canyon and surrounded by the towering peaks of the Andes, Bolivia’s administrative capital is unlike anywhere else I’ve visited. Streets twist through steep valleys, colourful neighbourhoods cling impossibly to mountainsides, and life unfolds at elevations where simply catching your breath can be an adventure. But to truly appreciate the scale and beauty of La Paz, you need to leave the streets behind. That’s exactly what I did when I stepped aboard Mi Teleférico, the world’s largest and highest urban aerial cable car system.

From the moment the cabin gently lifted away from the station, I knew this wasn’t going to be an ordinary ride. The bustling traffic disappeared beneath me, replaced by an ever-expanding panorama of terracotta rooftops, winding roads, vibrant markets, and snow-capped mountains stretching across the horizon. Floating silently above the city felt almost surreal, as though I had been given a front-row seat to one of South America’s most spectacular urban landscapes.

Most people associate cable cars with mountain resorts or ski holidays, but La Paz has transformed the idea into something entirely different. Here, cable cars aren’t simply a tourist attraction—they’re an essential part of everyday life. The ambitious Mi Teleférico network was launched in 2014 during the presidency of Evo Morales to solve one of the city’s greatest challenges: moving millions of people across the extreme changes in elevation that make traditional transport slow and congested.

The first Red, Yellow, and Green lines immediately revolutionised public transport, creating a ten-kilometre airborne highway connecting La Paz with the neighbouring city of El Alto. Since then, the network has continued to expand into an extraordinary web of colourful lines reaching across the metropolitan area. Today, it stands as one of the world’s most innovative public transportation systems and has become an icon of modern Bolivia. For travellers, it’s also one of the country’s greatest bargains.

For just a few Bolivianos—less than the cost of a morning coffee—you can ride high above the city for unforgettable panoramic views. Every station reveals another perspective, another neighbourhood, another glimpse into daily Bolivian life. Families head to work, children return home from school, street vendors prepare for another busy afternoon, and all of it unfolds beneath your feet as you quietly glide overhead. I found myself lingering at the windows, camera in hand, trying to capture scenes that constantly changed with every passing minute. The further the cable car climbed, the more dramatic the landscape became. Entire districts seemed to cascade down the canyon walls while the mighty Andes framed the horizon like a permanent postcard.

What impressed me most wasn’t simply the engineering—it was how naturally the system had become woven into the rhythm of the city. Tourists and commuters share the same cabins, locals effortlessly changing lines while visitors stand speechless at the views. It perfectly reflects La Paz itself: practical, vibrant, welcoming, and full of surprises. Each ride became more than transportation. It became a journey through the city’s many layers—its geography, culture, architecture, and everyday life—all unfolding from a perspective few cities in the world can offer.

If you’re planning a trip to Bolivia, don’t make the mistake of treating Mi Teleférico as just another attraction to tick off your list. Ride multiple lines, stop at different stations, explore neighbourhoods you might never otherwise visit, and simply enjoy watching this remarkable city from above. Some of the best memories are made not at famous landmarks, but during the quiet moments suspended high above the streets.

Looking back through the photographs from my journey, I’m reminded how difficult it is to capture the feeling of floating over La Paz. The images tell part of the story, but they can’t recreate the silence inside the cabin, the excitement of climbing ever higher, or the sense of wonder as the city stretches endlessly beneath you.
