From the moment I arrived, I could sense that Murano wasn’t simply another destination—it was a living workshop where history and creativity coexist. Every narrow street seemed to lead to another small studio, every bridge revealed another postcard-perfect view, and every shop window sparkled with handcrafted glass that caught the Venetian sunlight like captured rainbows.

What makes Murano truly extraordinary is its incredible legacy. Since 1291, when Venice ordered its glassmakers to move their furnaces away from the city because of the constant fire risk, the island has become synonymous with artistic excellence. Long before I stepped inside, I knew this wasn’t just another government building. It is one of those rare places where architecture, politics, tragedy, and hope converge. Standing before its imposing sandstone façade, I couldn’t help but reflect on everything these walls have witnessed over the past 130 years. Completed in 1894, the Reichstag was built to house the parliament of the German Empire. It symbolised a confident, newly unified nation looking toward the future. But history soon took a different turn.

Its darkest chapter came in February 1933, when a fire tore through the parliamentary chamber. Although the cause remains debated, the Nazi regime quickly used the event to suspend civil liberties and eliminate political opposition. It became a pivotal moment in Hitler’s rise to power. Walking through the building today, it is hard to grasp how dramatically its fate changed after that night.

The Second World War left the Reichstag in ruins. Allied bombing and the Battle of Berlin reduced the once-proud parliament to a shattered shell, with collapsed roofs, blackened stone, and walls scarred by artillery fire. For decades afterwards, it stood neglected near the divide between East and West Berlin. During the Cold War, the abandoned structure took on an eerie afterlife. It is said that Stasi agents even used its ruins for training exercises—a strange fate for a building once dedicated to democracy.

Only after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 did the Reichstag begin its transformation. British architect Norman Foster was tasked with reimagining the building, carefully balancing respect for its past with Germany’s vision for the future. When it reopened in 1999 as the home of the Bundestag, it had become something entirely new. The most striking feature is Foster’s glass dome. They came while wandering without purpose through Old Montreal, where cobbled streets echoed beneath my footsteps and elegant stone buildings reflected another era. Every corner revealed something worth pausing for—a small café with tables spilling onto the pavement, an inviting restaurant terrace filled with conversation, or a quiet square where time seemed to slow down.

Montreal has an effortless rhythm. Historic walk-up apartments stand comfortably beside modern glass towers, creating a city that never feels trapped in its past yet never forgets it either. That balance is what makes Montreal so captivating. It embraces change without sacrificing its character.

As a photographer, I found endless inspiration here. Art isn’t confined to museums or galleries; it lives on building walls, in colourful murals, independent shops, public spaces, and even in the people who bring the city to life. It isn’t simply a place filled with books—it feels like stepping inside a living work of art, where architecture, nature, and knowledge exist in perfect harmony.

Designed by acclaimed Mexican architect Alberto Kalach and opened in 2007, Biblioteca Vasconcelos has become one of Mexico City’s most remarkable contemporary landmarks. Often called the city’s “mega-library,” it stretches across more than 38,000 square metres, creating an experience that is as much about discovery as it is about reading.

As I approached the library, I immediately realised this wasn’t going to be an ordinary visit. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, the building rises from the greenery like a futuristic sanctuary. One evening, I left my map behind and simply wandered. There was no destination. No itinerary. Just the irresistible invitation of streets that seemed to whisper stories from another century.

Every corner revealed another beautiful scene waiting to be photographed. Wooden storefronts glowed beneath paper lanterns, their handcrafted signs hinting at family businesses that have survived for generations. Kyoto Station is Japan’s second-largest railway station, surpassed only by Tokyo Station, and it welcomes more than 200,000 passengers every day. Yet despite its scale, it never feels overwhelming. Everything seems to flow with remarkable precision—a quiet choreography that only Japan seems capable of achieving.

Designed by celebrated architect Hiroshi Hara, the station opened in 1997 as part of Kyoto’s 1,200th anniversary celebrations. Its bold modernist design was controversial at first. Many questioned whether such a futuristic building belonged in a city famous for centuries-old temples, traditional gardens, and wooden townhouses.

Today, that contrast is exactly what makes Kyoto Station so fascinating. Outside, Kyoto whispers stories from Japan’s past. Inside, it offers a glimpse of the country’s future. The station is far more than a transportation hub. Hidden within its vast interior are hundreds of shops, restaurants serving everything from ramen to elegant kaiseki cuisine, the impressive Isetan Department Store, Hotel Granvia Kyoto, cinemas, cafés, exhibition spaces, and even government offices. You could easily spend an entire day here without boarding a single train.

One of my favourite experiences comes after sunset. The Grand Staircase transforms into a spectacular digital canvas as thousands of LED lights create animated displays that dance across the steps. Patterns shift, colours ripple, and seasonal themes come alive before crowds who pause, cameras forgotten for a moment, to watch. It’s one of those unexpected experiences that reminds you why travel is about far more than checking landmarks off a list.

During my last visit, I photographed the staircase in black and white. While the colours disappeared, the architecture and atmosphere became even more striking. The photographs captured the geometry, the scale, and the movement—but they still couldn’t fully recreate what it feels like to stand there in person. Some places simply refuse to fit inside a photograph.

Before leaving, don’t miss the Skyway—an elevated glass walkway stretching high above the station. From here you’ll enjoy sweeping views across Kyoto, with Kyoto Tower rising prominently above the city skyline. It’s a peaceful escape from the movement below and one of the station’s hidden highlights.

What impresses me most about Kyoto Station is how it reflects modern Japan itself. Innovation and environmental responsibility exist side by side.

Kyoto is often celebrated for its shrines, bamboo forests, geisha districts, and centuries of history. Yet this remarkable station tells another equally important story—that Japan continues to innovate while respecting its heritage.

No matter how many photographs you’ve seen, no matter how many documentaries you’ve watched, nothing prepares you for that first glimpse. Walking through Barcelona’s Eixample district, the basilica suddenly rises above the surrounding buildings like something that shouldn’t exist—a forest of soaring towers sculpted from stone, each one reaching confidently toward the Mediterranean sky. It feels less like a building, and more like an impossible dream made real.

For over 140 years, this extraordinary masterpiece has been growing from the heart of Barcelona. Conceived by the brilliant Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, the Sagrada Família is far more than a church. It is the physical expression of one man’s imagination, faith, and unwavering belief that architecture should imitate the natural world.

Standing before its elaborate façades, I found myself constantly looking closer. Every surface tells a story. Delicate carvings of plants intertwine with biblical figures. Animals hide among the stonework. Saints, angels, and symbols emerge from shadows created by the afternoon sun. The longer you stand there, the more details reveal themselves. It isn’t a monument designed for a quick photograph; it’s a place that rewards patience.

But magnificent as the exterior is, it serves merely as an introduction. Crossing the threshold into the basilica is one of those rare travel moments that completely changes your expectations.

Instead of the dark interiors found in many Gothic cathedrals, light pours in from every direction. Massive columns rise effortlessly from the floor like giant tree trunks before branching high overhead into a stone canopy. Gaudí imagined visitors walking through a forest, where nature and faith become inseparable, and the effect is astonishing. Rather than feeling enclosed, the space feels alive.

The stained-glass windows transform sunlight into something almost tangible. Blues and greens wash across one side of the basilica, while fiery reds, oranges, and golds illuminate the other. As the sun moves across the sky, the colours slowly migrate across the floor and columns, creating an ever-changing display that makes every visit unique. There is no need for words. Most visitors simply stop, look upward, and quietly absorb the spectacle unfolding around them.

Perhaps what makes the Sagrada Família even more remarkable is that it remains unfinished. Construction began in 1882, and although Gaudí devoted the final fifteen years of his life almost exclusively to the project, he understood he would never witness its completion. Famously, he remarked, “My client is not in a hurry,” referring to God.

Generations of architects, engineers, sculptors, and craftsmen have continued his work, carefully interpreting his vision using both traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Every crane above the basilica reminds visitors that history is still being written. Unlike most famous landmarks, this one continues to evolve before our eyes.

Every element inside and outside carries meaning. The Nativity Façade celebrates life with joyful, organic forms overflowing with nature. The Passion Façade tells the story of suffering through stark, angular sculptures that seem almost haunting. The future Glory Façade will complete Gaudí’s narrative of faith and eternal hope. Together, they transform stone into storytelling on a monumental scale.

For those willing to venture higher, climbing one of the towers offers an entirely different perspective. Narrow passages wind through the soaring spires before opening onto breathtaking views across Barcelona. From above, the city unfolds in every direction—the orderly streets of the Eixample, the distant Mediterranean shimmering on the horizon, and familiar landmarks such as Casa Batlló and Park Güell reminding you just how deeply Gaudí’s imagination shaped this remarkable city.

Yet the memory I carried away wasn’t the panorama. It was the silence. Despite welcoming millions of visitors each year, there are moments inside the basilica when conversation fades, cameras lower, and people simply stand in quiet wonder. It’s a rare place where architecture transcends engineering and becomes emotion. Whether you arrive as a believer, an admirer of art, or simply a curious traveller, the Sagrada Família invites reflection in a way few places ever manage.

Leaving the basilica, I looked back one final time. Tower cranes still stood above the spires, workers continued shaping Gaudí’s vision, and sunlight danced across the intricate stone as if the building itself were alive.

Perhaps that is the greatest lesson the Sagrada Família offers. Some masterpieces are never truly finished. They continue to grow, inspire, and evolve long after their creators are gone. And for those fortunate enough to step inside, they leave behind something far more enduring than photographs—they leave a sense of wonder that lingers long after Barcelona disappears from view.

Few places in New York City manage to combine transportation, architecture, history, and emotion as effortlessly as the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. Better known as the Oculus, this spectacular landmark is much more than a railway station—it is a symbol of renewal, resilience, and visionary design. When I first visited New York years ago, the Oculus was still taking shape behind construction barriers. Each return to Manhattan revealed another glimpse of Santiago Calatrava’s ambitious masterpiece, making me increasingly curious about what the finished building would feel like from the inside. Finally walking through its doors was well worth the wait.

Completed in 2016, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub serves as the main PATH station connecting New Jersey with Lower Manhattan. Hidden beneath the streets of the Financial District are five railway tracks and four platforms spread across several underground levels. Yet despite its role as a busy commuter hub, the building feels more like a modern cathedral than a station.

The moment I entered, I was struck by the incredible sense of space. Bright natural light pours through the enormous glass skylight overhead, illuminating the gleaming white ribs that stretch toward the ceiling like the wings of a bird preparing for flight. Every angle seems carefully designed, encouraging visitors to pause, look upward, and appreciate the remarkable symmetry that has made the Oculus one of New York’s most photographed interiors.

Although thousands of commuters pass through each day, the atmosphere never feels overwhelming. Instead, the vast open plaza creates a surprising sense of calm amid the constant movement. Shoppers browse the many retail stores, travellers hurry to catch trains, photographers search for the perfect composition, and tourists stand in silent admiration of the architecture surrounding them. Even the Apple Store blends naturally into this contemporary setting, reinforcing the feeling that this is as much a public gathering place as it is a transportation hub.

One of my favourite features was the elevated viewing balconies overlooking the main hall. From these vantage points, the building’s graceful lines become even more impressive, revealing the precision and balance of Calatrava’s design. Looking through the glass roof, I caught sight of One World Trade Center rising into the Manhattan skyline—a powerful reminder of both the city’s resilience and its constant evolution.

Visiting during the Christmas season added another layer of magic to the experience. Elegant holiday decorations softened the sleek modern architecture, creating a wonderful contrast between festive tradition and contemporary design. Twinkling lights reflected across the brilliant white surfaces, while the cheerful atmosphere made the Oculus feel both grand and welcoming. It was one of those moments where architecture and the season combined to create a memory that photographs alone can never fully capture.

The World Trade Center Transportation Hub stands as one of New York City’s finest examples of modern architecture. There are places you visit, and then there are places that completely absorb you. Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) belongs firmly in the second category.

The moment I stepped beneath its ancient vaulted ceilings, I realised this wasn’t simply a market—it was a city within a city. Every corridor seemed to whisper stories that stretched back centuries, while every turn revealed another splash of colour, another smiling merchant, another hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.

Founded in 1455 shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, the Grand Bazaar has welcomed traders, explorers, and curious travellers for nearly six hundred years. Today, with more than 4,000 shops spread across 61 covered streets, it remains one of the largest and oldest covered markets anywhere in the world.

Yet statistics tell only part of the story. The real magic begins when you slow down. The scent of freshly ground spices drifts through the air, blending effortlessly with the rich aroma of Turkish coffee. Lanterns cast warm reflections across polished ceramics while displays of colourful textiles seem almost impossible to photograph without stopping every few steps. Gold jewellery sparkles beneath intricate ceilings, handcrafted leather goods line centuries-old passageways, and beautifully woven carpets invite visitors to imagine the generations of artisans who created them.

For photographers, it’s impossible not to become captivated. Every doorway frames another scene. Every shaft of sunlight creates another perfect composition. The Grand Bazaar is a place where history and everyday life coexist in remarkable harmony.

But beyond its beauty lies an extraordinary legacy. For centuries, this marketplace stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, serving as one of the Ottoman Empire’s most important commercial centres along the legendary Silk Road. Merchants from distant lands gathered here to exchange silk, spices, precious metals, and ideas. Despite devastating fires, powerful earthquakes, political upheaval, and the arrival of modern shopping centres, the bazaar continues to thrive much as it always has.

Walking through its winding alleys today, you can still witness traditional craftsmanship that has changed little over generations. Skilled artisans carefully engrave silver, weave carpets by hand, shape ceramics, and polish intricate jewellery with remarkable precision. Every object carries its own story, connecting today’s visitors with centuries of Ottoman tradition.

Of course, no visit would be complete without embracing one of the Grand Bazaar’s oldest customs—bargaining. Negotiating prices isn’t viewed as confrontation here; it’s part of the experience. Conversations become as valuable as the purchase itself, often ending with laughter, friendly smiles, and perhaps a small glass of tea shared between buyer and seller.

Eventually, even the most enthusiastic explorer needs a break. Scattered throughout and around the bazaar are welcoming cafés and traditional eateries where you can enjoy a freshly prepared gözleme, savour authentic Turkish tea, or cool down with a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice before setting off once again into the maze of hidden passages.

The Grand Bazaar isn’t simply somewhere to shop. It’s a living museum, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a reminder that the most memorable travel experiences often come from wandering without a destination. Here, getting lost isn’t an inconvenience—it’s exactly the point.

Long after leaving Istanbul, I found that it wasn’t the souvenirs I remembered most. It was the atmosphere. The conversations. The colours. The centuries of history echoing beneath those magnificent domes.

At precisely 8:15 am on August 6, 1945, a moment etched in history unfolded as the United States Army Air Forces released an unimaginable force upon the city of Hiroshima, Japan. From the belly of the Enola Gay, a B-29 bomber, the world witnessed the harrowing dawn of atomic warfare. With a blinding flash and an earth-shattering roar, the atomic bomb transformed the landscape, obliterating a vibrant city and the lives of over 140,000 people in its devastating wake.

During my travels to Hiroshima, I felt compelled to delve into this poignant chapter of human history. My journey led me to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where I visited the sombre yet beautifully curated museum, immersing myself in the stories and artefacts that speak to both the horrors and the resilience of humanity. Each exhibit serves as a haunting reminder of that fateful day, inviting reflection and understanding.

One of the most striking landmarks is the Genbaku Dome, once the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. Standing amidst the serenity of the memorial park, the Dome rises defiantly against the sky, its skeletal remains serving as a powerful symbol of peace. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, this iconic structure remains a testament to the city's spirit and the indomitable will of its people to rebuild and heal.

I returned to the Dome not once but twice, captivated by its silent narrative. As I snapped photographs, I was struck by the juxtaposition of the haunting ruins against the backdrop of a bustling city that has emerged from the ashes of its past. The beauty of Hiroshima today, alive with cherry blossoms and vibrant street life, stands in stark contrast to the historical events that shaped its fate.

As I reflect on my time in Hiroshima, I am reminded that the echoes of the past still resonate within the hearts of its people. The photographs I captured tell a story of sorrow, resilience, and hope for a future free from the shadows of war.
