Today I stopped in Sitges to admire one of the town’s most beautiful traditions — the flower carpets created for Corpus Christi. For a single day each year, the streets of the old town are transformed into colourful works of art made entirely from flower petals, leaves, and natural materials.

Walking through Sitges felt magical. The narrow Mediterranean streets were covered with intricate floral patterns in bright reds, yellows, whites, and greens, while the scent of fresh flowers filled the air. Locals and visitors slowly wandered through the town, stopping to photograph the displays and admire the incredible detail of the handmade carpets.

The tradition of Corpus Christi dates back to the 13th century, when the Catholic feast was established to celebrate the Eucharist. In Catalonia, the celebration evolved into the creation of floral carpets, known as catifes de flors. Sitges became especially famous for this tradition during the late nineteenth century, when the town developed into an important artistic and cultural centre.

What makes the festival so special is the sense of community behind it. Families, neighbours, and local associations spend hours — often through the night — carefully arranging thousands of petals by hand. Although the carpets last only a short time before the religious procession passes over them, that temporary beauty is part of the tradition itself.

Hoy hice una parada en Sitges para admirar una de las tradiciones más bonitas de la ciudad: las alfombras florales del Corpus Christi. Durante un solo día al año, las calles del casco antiguo se transforman en auténticas obras de arte hechas con pétalos de flores, hojas y materiales naturales.

Pasear por Sitges fue una experiencia mágica. Las estrechas calles mediterráneas estaban cubiertas de elaborados diseños florales en tonos rojos, amarillos, blancos y verdes, mientras el aroma de las flores frescas llenaba el aire. Vecinos y visitantes recorrían lentamente la ciudad, deteniéndose para fotografiar las alfombras y admirar el increíble trabajo artesanal detrás de cada detalle.

La tradición del Corpus Christi se remonta al siglo XIII, cuando esta festividad católica fue creada para celebrar la Eucaristía.
